Security Tips for Using ATMs

At walk-up ATMs

  • Park as close as possible to the terminal, and observe the entire area from the safety of your car before getting out.
  • If you see anyone or anything that appears to be suspicious, leave the area and call the police immediately.
  • Never approach an ATM after dark if the lights do not appear adequate.
  • Don't leave the ATM with your wallet or cash exposed.
  • While waiting in line, give the person ahead of you the privacy you expect. Allow the user to move away from the ATM before you approach the terminal.
  • While standing at the terminal, make sure no one is watching when you enter your PIN––use your body to block the view from people behind you.
  • Be cautious about withdrawing large amounts of cash at ATMs if you are alone and/or at night.
  • Do not count your cash in front of the ATM.
  • Be sure to take your receipt.
  • If anyone follows you after making an ATM transaction, go immediately to a crowded, well-lit area and call the police.
  • As an alternative, use the cash-back-with-purchase option inside a retail store during checkout.
  • Report lost or stolen ATM cards immediately.

 At Drive-Up ATMs

  • When waiting in line at an ATM, keep your engine running, the doors locked, and the windows up at all times.
  • If possible, leave enough room between your car and other cars to allow for a quick exit should it become necessary.
  • Before rolling down the window to use the ATM, observe the entire area around the ATM. If you see anything that appears suspicious, drive away from the area at once.
  • Minimize your time at the ATM by having your card ready.
  • Be sure to take your receipt.
  • If anyone follows you after making an ATM transaction, go immediately to a crowded, well-lit area and call the police.

At All ATMs

  • If an ATM is obstructed from view or poorly lit, go to another ATM. Report the problem to the financial institution that operates the ATM.
  • Minimize time spent at the ATM by having your card out and ready to use. Once you have completed your transaction, take your money, card and receipt and immediately leave the terminal area.
  • If you see anyone or anything suspicious while conducting your transaction, cancel your transaction and leave immediately.
